This is a rare 18th c. white pearl button of uncommon iridescence (suggesting it is not nautilus shell) engraved and overlaid in silver and gold to depict a garden gazebo. It has an amazingly hand-carved twist rope edge and, unfortunately, a significant if hidden wart: a back chip. The chip is probably as old as the button (see the close up and soft wear on the defect) but is pretty much concealed by front view. It wants to be mounted on a card of it peers where its embarrassing defect is protected from prying eyes :) A lovely old pearl measuring 1 & 3/8" and looking somehow more like 1 & 1/2".
