This is an unusual 19th c. mourning brooch. It is made of inexpensive pressed back glass cemented to metal with pitch--very inexpensive manufacture and yet the reverse intaglio glass scene looks very much like a real sulphide. I am sure it is not, but I like the look :) The glass in sealed under a brass frame. It measures 1 & 5/8" by 1 & 3/8" and is in remarkably good condition--still sturdy throughout.
