This is a medium size 1 & 5/8" brooch made of shell operculum (the "trap door" of a univalve) set in gold-plated brass, still bright. The shells are securely set in tiny back prongs, but someone poured old musilage over them...maybe they rattled. (Hot water will dissolve muscilage--it's the least offensive of all glues.) I don't know why they were sometimes called God eyes. Those crazy Victorians....
