This striking brooch measures 1 & 7/8 by 1 & 1/2 inches. I think it is a memento mori form the early to mid-19th century. Technically, this sweet-faced reptile is not an ouroborus because he's not hungry for his tail. Snakes though have long symbolized eternity. Even if the snake's a Disney character, he's handsome with those eye brows. An agate stone cut like with a circle used to be called a "god eye": The eye of God sees all forever. But maybe I imagined this because now I can't find the original reference. This is not gold--pinchbeck? It is a wonderful rich warm gold color with no tarnish or brassing (thin spots where plate is worn away to reveal brass).
