This is a brooch from the mid-19th c. when aluminum was an expensive embellishment on jewelry. The brooch is plainly carved natural jet and has some roughness and a shallow chip. The aluminum is very bright (polished with cream of tartar in warm water)--it sparkles. Notwithstanding the wear and tear, it is in original condition and still a rare, attractive mourning piece. It measures 2". The aluminum was
drilled into the jet as can be seen on the back.
