This Georgian button measures 1 & 1/8" (a hair more) and is in excellent condition. The glass insert looks like enamel, but it is not. It is mounted over pressed foil to imitate fancy enameling. The rose escutcheon is pinned to the glass. Marcasite buttons are rare--most are from the 18th and early 19th century. They are easily distinguishable from cut steels, but some button seller describe cut steel as marcasite. Be wary :) This is a fabulous fine silver (tested), marcasite, and bleu de roi glass button from about the first decade of the 19th century. It appears in one or two of the early reference books. The marcasites no longer sparkle like diamond, but they still sparkle like black diamonds!
