This large 1 & 1/2" button from the late 18th century is rendered in monochrome under glass and depicts the Roman hero Horatius. The subject lost an eye in battle. This is great button for the theater category as apparently he was the subject of a popular 18th century French opera: "Horatius Coclès is an opera that it is based on the Roman legend of Horatius Cocles and was created during the Reign of Terror, at the height of the French Revolution, when all works of art were strongly encouraged to have a political purpose. The opera is in one act and nine scenes (styled an acte lyrique ) by the French composer Étienne Nicolas Méhul with a libretto by Antoine-Vincent Arnault. It was first performed at the Paris Opéra on 18 February 1794." (Courtesy of Wikipedia). The button is in excellent condition.
