This is a rare and lovely 18th c. pearl button--a gentleman's button at that--embellished with piercing, carving, and teeny pastes set with beeswax (yes, it really holds) The central paste jewel is bezel set and brilliant. A layer of bright copper foil lies between the cut and pierced pearl. It has an elaborated fluted edge and is in excellent condition. It has two shank plates, copper and brass, and a copper flat wire shank. This, and its set, reposed in a fitted velvet box in a drawer in a castle in France for at least 200 years and looks like it was made yesterday. It measures 1 & 1/2".
