Offered here is a rare and wonderful antique Tibetan Locket, hand fabricated of Sterling Silver circa 1880. The two figures in sculptural repousse’, depicted on the high domed front and back, are representations of Tibetan Buddhist Goddesses; the figure holding the lute like instrument on her lap is Sarasvati, Goddess of the Arts.
The original silver frame and glass lens are fitted snugly to hold pictures or small keepsakes or mementos safely inside. The large locket is hinged and has a tension fit closure which holds the two halves firmly closed. There is a tiny fingernail indent at the side for opening it. This locket was probably created for the Victorian Era British market.
The locket has no stamped hallmarks; it has been assay tested positively as Sterling Silver.
Measurements: Shape: Oval Dome – (ovoid) Weight: 24.7 Grams Height: 1 ¾” Width: 1 ½” Depth: 1”
The high quality locket has been very well preserved; there are no dents, dings, flea bites, repairs, restorations, scratches or any other signs of wear or abuse. The condition and the finish are in excellent condition. There is, naturally, tarnish indicative of its age. Although I do not recommend that it be done the locket can be hand polished to remove as much of the tarnish as desired.
