Offered here is an original antique Victorian Whitby Jet brooch displaying a handsome Roman Soldier in Classic profile. The solid Jet carved brooch is a wonderful example of antique sentimental or mourning jewelry.
The closure on the back of the large oval pin is a shapely brass plate with a hinged T-bar pin stem and a “C” clasp. There is one small shallow concoidal round chip at the upper back edge which is not visible when wearing the pin; please see the photos. The brooch measures 2” in height by 1 ¾” across. The cameo carving of the Roman Soldier with his metal helmet adorned with a long feather is at the center of the oval pin. Surrounding the cameo is a ½” wide wreath which is framed with an intricately carved twisted rope edge.
It is in excellent vintage condition, the brooch has a high polished finish which makes the naturally black jet appear as black as black can be. There are no scratches or repairs only the nearly invisible round flake on the back to keep it from absolute perfection.
Jet was worn for mourning since Georgian times, Queen Victoria made it very popular and it has been worn for its artistic appeal as well as an indication of mourning. Jet is naturally a very light weight material so although the pin is quite large and thick its specific gravity is low so it weighs only 24 grams.
