A substantial antique hand carved Federal mantel, dating from the 1820's, and found in a home in Owensboro, KY. The poplar mantel is crowned with a stepped and notched mantel shelf; the mantel face below is ornamented with a fluted oval flanked with two smaller, fluted ovals which crown the mantel legs below. Each mantel leg splits into two fluted columns which come down to perch above pilaster style bases. The mantel is in very good condition with a fabulously crackled and chippy finish with the expected wear and some large screws (as pictured.) It measures 85-1/8" wide, 64-3/4" tall and 14-1/2" deep, and has a firebox opening of approximately 56" wide and 44-1/4" tall.
