Offering an antique, Victorian Valentines Day card.
This is a large Valentine card measuring 11" X 8" when closed. It opens and there is a poem inside. The face of the card has three levels that raise up on little paper legs. The first level is the base one which is embossed paper in gold with pink forget me not flowers. The next level is paper covered with daisies, forget me nots and green vines. The third level is silver lace gilt paper with doves carrying forget me not flowers in their mouths. This level is edged in red silk fabric ruffles. In the center of the third level is a framed picture of a lake and a man walking down a lane near a house.
The little paper legs that hold each level away from the next, are all there but have been folded so long I cannot keep them open. They keep refolding into place so I couldn't get a picture of the card with layers all opened apart. The silver lace paper has peeled in spots. The card opens to reveal a picture and a poem. The picture in shades of red is of the country side with birds in the trees. There is a Victorian love poem which I have provided a close up of so you can read.
This card has no rips, tears or writing on it. The paper has yellowed a bit and as I mentioned some of the silver lace paper is peeling, but other than that, no damage.
Along with the card comes the original envelope and the surprise here is that it is addressed not to a woman, but to a man named Carl Christsen in Minneapolis. The envelope carries a block of four carmine colored two cent stamps, with a young George Washington in profile. The stamps are canceled.
The envelope is yellowed with time but it appears to have been a cream colored and is heavily embossed with flowers. I am sure this was an expensive card in its day. The envelope measures 12" X 10". It was cleanly opened with a knife on the side, so the flap is still sealed.
The cover has lightly bumped edges and some age toning but is still in pretty good condition.
