Offering a vintage, clay / sandstone pottery bowl / platter. This belonged to my great aunt and I am pretty sure she purchased it somewhere in Africa in the 1960's.
This shallow bowl platter measures roughly 13" in diameter and has a free form undulating rim. It is clear the piece was shaped by hand and although my aunt displayed it in a cabinet I think this was probably a utilitarian item originally.
The walls of the piece are only about 1/4" thick but the bowl has tensile strength and is well balanced. No artificial colors have been applied and the design on the face is merely scraped into the surface.
Whatever it was used for, it is quite striking in its simplicity and form.
No chips or cracks. The surface is somewhat uneven with small pocks and gouges, but this is an effect of the material itself.
