Offering a stunning, antique, 19th century, Meerschaum tobacco pipe.
This sculpture pipe measures 11" long in it's entirety with the carved Meerschaum part being 4 1/2" long, and the cherry amber stem being 7" long including the hidden tenon.
The deep carving features a horse being harassed by either a wolf or a dog.
The Meerschaum is toned with age and there are variations in the coloring and some loss of beeswax finish especially on the horse head. The bowl is dark inside and has obviously been used. A few scattered nicks including a tiny bit off of one ear point on the dog. I am not sure but I think the Meerschaum carving is built on a shank of golden amber. The material here is different, glossier, smoother and with peculiar marking.
The tenon is carved with threads cut like a screw. No damage or chew marks on the cherry amber bit.
This is a beautiful piece of Tobacciana , interesting to look at and hold.
