Offering an antique, hand molded and carved, decorative clay wall plate from Germany.
This is a unique piece, brought to Minnesota from Germany, by immigrants at the turn of the century.
The plate is large, measuring 14" in diameter and not flat but deeply concave, a large shallow bowl with an intricate, high relief, hand carved and painted scene.
The picture is of a boy in a sled pulled by a reindeer. Behind them are the roofs of a town and they are on a bridge leading to a castle surrounded by trees. I think this might be a scene from a popular European fairy tale or more likely a Christmas story, as the scene is set in winter.
There is great depth to this relief, with the picture rising out quite strongly and sharply from the background. There are no chips or cracks. There is a bit of crazing and a small loss of paint. The back has a simple hanging wire sunk into the clay.
