Offering a beautiful antique silk, fully hand embroidered handkerchief.
This hanky measures approximately 10" square.
The material is silk, as is the thread used to decorate it. The hems were hand rolled and the handmade lace attached by hand. The colors although now much faded, are pink and green.
The pattern has four flowers and four shields surrounded by scattered smaller flowers. The center is an emblem or symbol that I don't recognize.
The handkerchief has a lot of age wear. You can see in the photos, the silk is separating in places and there are missing threads in the embroidery. A section of lace edging is detached. The hanky is stiffer and heavy in weight, perhaps from being stored flat for decades and the great amount of embroidery thread involved. I also wonder if the silk was whiter once and has turned darker with age.
This hanky came out of my great aunt's estate and family lore has it, that the hanky was passed down to her from her great grandmother.
The handkerchief was photographed inside a frame under glass, but this is not the way I will mail it. The frame doesn't really belong to it, I just put the hanky in there for protection and to avoid having to handle it. I'll ship the handkerchief wrapped flat and in a box.
