Offering an antique, chalkware – chalk ware, kitchen or fireplace match holder.
My grandfather collected vintage and antique match holders and I am beginning to list some of them.
This particular piece features what I think is a monk's head. He is wearing a red cowl and his face is composed, his eyes focused downwards. This piece dates from the late 1800's.
The head measures 4" top to bottom and approximately 4" across. There are many small nick and chips in the plaster and coloring, and these are to be expected in an antique item made only from chalk / plaster.
Inexpensive match holder heads like these were hand made by artisans, and sold in the streets by itinerant vendors who lined them up on trays which they carried on their heads.
