Here's a lovely early carved bone needle case in the form of an umbrella. Most likely it originally had a stanhope* in the hole by the top. The French made some of these. But as it is, it still has a lot going for it. There is intricate carving to show the tiny folds in the umbrella, and the bands around the piece. It was turned first and then hand carved for details.
The case is in good condition for its age. It is 3 3/4" long. There is a slight pink tone to the piece, it was probably dyed a reddish color originally.
A very nice collector's item, or for the lover of figural pieces like me.
(*A stanhope is a highly reduced photograph set on a tiny lens. When held to the eye it can be seen. Most often they were made as souvenirs of places.)
