Here's a nicely carved coconut shell from Jamaica made into a basket form. It has the word "Jamaica" etched across the top of the handle. A large flower is carved into the bottom. The piece measures 5" long by 3 1/2" wide and 3 3/4" high. The details such as the scalloped edge give it a lot of interest.
The piece was probably carved around the 1940's, or perhaps a little earlier - the patina is very nice. The basket is in very good shape - only a few very light scratches.
It was probably made as a souvenir, but I haven't been able to find too many like it. It's really a sweet example of folk art craft from the lovely Caribbean.
