Here's a perfectly wonderful large crown shaped antique brooch or pin. It is really loaded with rose diamonds and old European cut diamonds. After counting several times, I got a total of 79 diamonds in this piece! It is 2 1/2" across and 3/4" high at the mid section. The diamonds are set in sterling silver and backed in 18k gold as is typical of this period. All of the back of the brooch is gold.
Originally one could have worn this pin in a couple of different ways. Apart from wearing it as a brooch, it would have converted to a tiara type hair ornament or comb top most likely. Many pieces in this era could be used in alternate ways. Now the bar at the back which originally would have unscrewed when not wearing it as a pin has been permanently secured to the back of the brooch. The piece weighs 12.7 grams.
This is quite an unusual find. Its a stunning piece of Victorian jewelry from around 1860. And personally I love both crowns and early cut diamonds, so I was thrilled to acquire this amazing pin.
