Here's a fantastic small vinaigrette in the form of a Scottish snuff mull. It is 2 1/8" long. It has a 1 3/4" chain attached to it as well, so it can be worn as a pendant or hanging elsewhere. Originally it may has hung from the waist, perhaps from a chatelaine. The horn itself has a perfect curled shape, the silver is sterling silver and has a cairngorm stone set into the top. Cairngorms are Scottish regional stones related to the quartz family.
The repousse work on the top depicts beautiful thistles. Inside you can remove the little grill by pulling on the tiny ring. People would put a solution in cotton wool or a small sponge under the grill and the smell would help them cope with foul smells they may encounter.
The condition is really excellent. There's a tiny pin missing near the hinge - which is very minor and could be added back (see the photos). But overall this wonderful antique is what I call a miracle of preservation for all its years.
This is a particularly fine example of this vinaigrette form - which is pretty rare indeed.
