Here's a really magnificent Swiss enamel set in 14k gold and dating from around 1870. The subject, which is really a hand done miniature painting, is Staubbach Falls in Switzerland. On the reverse side of the brooch is written "Staubbach" in enamel. The painting is filled with color and lovely detail. It captures theis natural wonder so well. The enamel itself is about 1 3/4" across by 1 1/8" high, the gold frame takes the dimension to 2 1/8" by 1 3/4".
The condition of the piece is excellent - the enamel is in really perfect shape. The lovely gold frame is also quite perfect. On the back around the edges it appears to have a tiny bit of what looks like a clear glue to reenforce the stability of the picture in the frame. It is very subtle and doesn't detract from the piece at all. Overall the brooch is in remarkable shape.
Staubbach Falls is in Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland and still looks a lot like this painting today - a little more built up perhaps. The falls drop from about 1,000 feet from a hanging valley above the Lutschin River. It is one of the highest falls in Europe.
This is a gorgeous piece of craftsmanship and artistry, a great find.
