Haitian Wood Carving By Berrier Duperrier - 1960's - Nativity
Here's a really charming and unusual take on the Nativity Scene. The artist, Berrier Duperrier is a known listed Haitian artist born in 1947. He carved this piece in the 1960's. The piece measures 16" by 8 1/2". It has his signature carved into the back and also a label from the previous owner in the 1960's. It must have been loaned to Sleepy Hollow Restorations for a period where the owner worked.
I love the asymmetrical shape of the piece, and the the unusual lines to the characters in it, lovely curves in his subjects. I also love the two adorable animal heads (donkeys?) between Joseph and Mary - a couple who look pretty exhausted. All in all, a really nice creation in carved relief.
