Here's a wonderful sterling and mother of pearl baby rattle by William Kerr from around 1900. It is 4 1/4" long. The well known nursery rhyme "This little pig went to market" is the theme of this fun piece. On one side it read "This Big Pig Went To Market"- showing a pig riding a dappled horse and on the other it reads "This Little Pig Stayed At Home" - showing a pig reading a book in his chair. The rattle is marked "sterling" and has the Kerr axe mark (somewhat rubbed but clear enough) and the style number seems to be marked 2817.
The rattle has a couple of condition issues, the sides have some shallow denting and the seam at the base of the silver part has a little nip in the silver and a little opening in the seam. The mother of pearl is fine - the rattle works well and feels very solid. And the overall appearance is so nice for this rare piece. It has lovely details, Kerr is very much appreciated by collectors. A rattle collector or pig lover's dream!
