Theatrical Tinsel Print - 19th Century English - Mrs Pope as Elwina of Raby
Here's a wonderful example of a rare thing. It's a particularly elaborate framed tinsel print made in England in the 1830's. It was re- framed much later in a very nice mirrored frame from the 1940's or 1950's as is shown in the photos.
These tinsel prints were made in the 19th century in England and sold as souvenirs to the theatre goers of the time. They depicted well known actors and shows of the period. The prints were pasted onto lightweight board or stiff paper, then enhanced with metal foils as well as bits of fabric, leather, feathers, ink, paint and other materials. This print has an amazing amount of added charm with the faux furs and beads, etc.
At first the prints sold were not embellished but eventually they were decorated like a collage and especially with tinsel that was die cut and applied and thus they were named tinsel prints.
This print is of Mrs. Johanna Pope - a popular and acclaimed actress at the time in the role of Elwina of Raby in the London show "Chevy Chase" by Henry M. Milner. This print was published July 9th, 1832 and is noted on the bottom of the piece.
