Here's a rare plaque made by Albion Pottery 148 years ago which commemorates the opening of the Cast Iron Bridge in the town of Sunderland, a major ship building port. For one year only namely 1864 Galloway & Atkinson who succeeded Issac Bell ran the Albion Pottery. This plaque is one of those produced by in that one year. The plaque measures 9 3/8" by 8 1/4". It has a three color sponged border with embossed leaf designs in each corner. The hand-colored transfer in the center of the bridge and the ship-filled river is described underneath - it reads, "A West View of the Cast Iron Bridge at Sunderland Built by R. Burdon, Esq MP Span 236 feet Height 100 feet Begun 24 Sep 1793 opened 9 Aug 1796." The plaque is in very good condition with only a very old chip on the bottom of the back which is not visible from the front. An impressed mark on the back says "Albion Pottery G&A".
