Here's a lovely French gilt metal box with a very pretty miniature under glass of a lady in the center. The box dates from around 1880. It measures 2" by 2" by 3/4" high. The miniature is 7/8" in diameter. The box is hinged and stays securely shut when closed. When you open the box you can see the impressed initials A.F. on the front rim. Most likely this is the maker's mark. The condition is very good the gilding is somewhat worn on the outside verses the inside, which is to be expected. The miniature is well done and she looks very pretty in her wonderful hat and shear blouse. A small box like this is often called a trinket box - it's a perfect place to stash a ring or another favorite trinket.
