We are delighted to offer this Victorian Moss Painting of Moss Roses on Embossed Celluloid. It was framed in the 1880's. Dealers, like parents aren’t supposed to have favorite children… I have broken that rule a few times in 35 years ... I LOVE, love this hand painted framed celluloid piece. Because of it’s size I was thinking it may have started it’s life as the cover of an early scrap or photo album. After opening it up so I could clean the glass and interior of the frame, I think it is what it looks like, a hand painted celluloid picture. The frame has at some point been painted white save the gilt and black “matte” area. It looks like it was originally black or dark walnut in color.
The celluloid itself is wafer thin as you would expect. The celluloid has an embossed area with a beautiful vase of flowers and ferns. There is a circle very full Moon like that is raised to the right of the vase. The hand painted Moss Rose is painted on this area. The photos do a much better job of description than my words. BUT please note it is so much more lovely in person than in my pictures. If your a rose person, if you just love the unusual this will make your heart sing. Who ever owned this before me hung it on the wall using a red ribbon. If you'd like me to put wire on the back I would be happy to do so. I just thought it was charming the way it came.
DIMENSIONS: 9 ½” x 8”
CONDITION: The frame and celluloid are in nice condition. No warping or discoloration. The painting is lovely. There are some small areas of paint loss on the rose. I mention this to be complete. It is not glaring. Please see all the pictures for details.
