We are delighted to have found for you this 1923 Dayton Co Tennis Racquet with it's Original Canvas Case. Are you looking to add to your vintage sports display? This vintage tennis racquet from 1923 is not only very rare and hard to find, it’s a perfect addition to any wall or shelf display. The Dayton Steel Racquet Company, Dayton, Ohio, started producing racquets in 1922....Strung with piano wire, they were considered indestructible & therefore ideal for schools etc., where they received rough handling------which is why most of the ones you see on the market today are in shall we say “used condition.” This particular Racquet is quite rare and is the first "New Dayton" models that I have seen...the more common models being 'Clipper', 'Cadet', 'Aviator' & 'Pilot'.
The wire strings are intact, in great condition, & actually unusually strung with two central main strings 'crossing-over' about an inch from the top & the bottom. The long 11 1/2" wooden shaft is interesting also, still with its original 7" long cloth protection, typical of this era. The Leather Butt Cap is in good shape & intact, as is the Dayton Logo underneath the Butt Cap. On the butt you can clearly see the words..." DAYTON STEEL CO. U.S.A. DAYTON OHIO PATENTED APRIL 17, 1923 "...On the upper shaft is clearly written New DAYTON RACQUET. The racquet comes in its original canvas case. (Original to me as purchased that is)The case is dusty dirty. It is not torn or fabric worn but could stand a cleaning.
DIMENSIONS: 26 3/4" x 9 ¼” wide
CONDITION: It is in very good condition, does have numerous, 'typical' Dayton scratches & paint chips around its brown metal framework, but this does not detract at all from the quality of this rare racquet. The grip may have had a different "fabric or tape" but I don't know that for certain. Please read the description carefully for other remarks on condition.
