This is an exceptional large late 19th or early 20th century Meissen Porcelain Snake Handled lamp. This piece would be a perfect size to use for an entry way. This classical baluster, elongated urn form lamp is hand painted in a cream ground color and with brush gilded highlights. The handles are formed with elaborately twisted snake handles. It is marked on the underside with a Meissen Pommel mark (curved handled crossed swords) used in the 1850 to 1924 period. There is also a paper label printed with the word Germany. It was factory drilled as a lamp and bolted together. The final rod that holds the circular finial does slide up and down and can be set tight at any number of spots for additional height. It sits on a multi layered wooden base. I am not certain the base is original to the urn but it works in size and shape. At some point the base was re-painted in yellow and cream. Rather than restore the base to an original color we have chosen to sell this piece as is. We have priced this lamp as is –to go.
