Lovely and large, this magnificent antique shell cameo of Hebe and the Eagle was expertly carved and mounted in a 14k gold frame. Hebe, the daughter of Zeus and Hera, was the goddess of youth and Cupbearer to the Gods. In this cameo, Zeus is depicted as an eagle being fed nectar from a carved vessel. Zeus had the ability to shapeshift into many forms, which was not uncommon in mythological tales.
The cameo measures 2 3/8" tall (without the bail) by a hair under 2" wide by 3/8" at the deepest and the bail adds another 3/8" in length. Total weight is 26.7 grams and the frame has been carefully assayed as 14k gold. Slightly rosy in color, the simple gold mounting is embellished with a fine twisted wire. In very good antique condition, this piece may be worn as either a pendant or a brooch. A beautifully carved and large example of Hebe and the Eagle, this piece will make a wonderful addition to any fine cameo collection.
