In beautiful blue and green plique a jour, this arresting vintage winged scarab is a pendant to behold. The splendid wings swoop from the bottom to the top and are in rich forest green enamel-plique a jour. The great scarab, in the same forest green enamel plique a jour, is completed in blue enamel plique a jour for the head and the blue is repeated in the upper piece and bail. The inner wings are adorned in sterling and marcasite as are the body, bow and bail.
The scarab was the most important amulet in ancient Egypt worn by the rich and the poor. The winged scarab was believed to have protective powers that gave the owner good things in this life and it the afterlife as well. The winged scarab was believed to guarantee a safe journey into the after world of the gods.
Popular throughout history and today, this symbol continues to be widely appealing. Unnoticeable to the eye and in the interest of disclosure, there are 2 tiny marcasites missing. On the back, the “sterling” mark is found along with a hallmark of unknown identification. The body of the pendant swings from the bail and the overall length measures approximately 2 ¼” x just under 1 ½” at the widest point. This beautiful pendant weighs 11.2 grams.
Worn on a chain, cord or a collar, it is a uniquely attractive and interesting statement piece of jewelry.
