This charming miniature Victorian Scottish Agate frame is set with a very pretty collection of 8 pieces of Scottish agate stones, including grey lace agate, orange jasper, bloodstone, carnelian and a variety of moss agate and accented by silver. Often, the stones are set in a mosaic style which nicely describes the border of this frame. Pebble jewelry, which is what Victorian Scottish agate was called, held the passion of the people throughout the Victorian era because it was both fashionable and affordable.
The precision of stone cutting and artistic engraving on silver always created an interesting piece and while it was primarily an industry that made jewelry, objets d’art were also produced to appeal to the desires of the people such as perfume bottles, frames, boxes, and other items.
Displaying each hand-cut stone alternating with an engraved silver design, this miniature frame is supported with a wooden backing and a silver easel-type stand. Turn it over and a faint hallmark is visible on the right hand side of the polished edge and on the top, behind the front façade, “Muriel” is engraved.
The agate-set border measures approximately 3/8” and the interior measures approximately 2” x 1 1/16.” Overall, the frame measures approximately 2 ½” x 1 13/18.” It weighs 33.6 grams.
