Artistically represented, this Art Nouveau locket, depicting Mercury in his glorious and detailed helmet, is a great treasure from the period!
Jupiter was the king of all the Roman gods and Mercury was his youngest son and was considered messenger of the gods. He is mostly known for his exceptional speed as symbolized by the winged detail in his helmet. In this beautiful profile of Mercury, he is facing a pretty mine-cut diamond as if he is facing the speed of light at which he travels.
The detail of the wing is presented in 14k white gold, a nice contrast to the 14k yellow gold locket. The workmanship exhibits the work of a great artist who cared about portraying Mercury in his beauty, strength and significance. Depicting a very attractive profile of Mercury, the original patina creates a lovely finish and pointed dimension to the overall impact.
There is a picture of a baby’s face in the locket which is easily removed by the new owner. The engraved initials on the back are very elaborate, serving as a beautiful engraved scroll work design. The pretty mine-cut diamond weighs *approximately 0.05 carats.
Marked 14k on the upper left hand interior on the right hand panel the locket weighs 9.2g. It measures 24.5 mm in diameter and from the top of the bail to the bottom of the locket, the measurement is 33.5mm.
