Rare and amazing, this antique Art Nouveau 18k gold, enamel and Persian turquoise buckle features four winged Putti, cherubs or angels riding dolphins. Their faces are quite wonderful and detailed, and between them they each hold a beautiful blue Persian Turquoise cabochon mounted in an ornate gold oval frame. Enameled flowers beautifully complete the idyllic scene. Nature and fantasy are perfectly combined in this piece, as was typical of Art Nouveau period jewelry.
The buckle is sewn onto a 1” wide and approx. 14” long black silk grosgrain ribbon to be worn as a choker. The two halves together measure 1” north to south and 1.5” east to west. The Persian turquoise cabochons measure approx. 1/8” by 3/16”. The buckle is marked 18ct on the back of the hook that connects the two halves together. In very good antique condition there is some age commensurate enamel loss as seen in the photos.
Obviously the work of a master goldsmith, this unusual antique Art Nouveau piece shows not only fine craftsmanship but also great imagination and innovative design.
