A look of supreme contentment and happiness on his face, this carved coral laughing Buddha, also known as Hotei or Budai, is beautifully portrayed by the carver in this exceptional 14k gold vintage ring. The mounting is formed to the Buddha’s head, so that the fluted sides perfectly accommodate his unusually shaped ears.
The Hotei or Budai is known for his happiness, plenitude and wisdom of fulfillment. Said to bring wealth, good luck and prosperity, in Japan, he is one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Taoism. Also known as a guardian of children, he sometimes depicted with a group of them surrounding his rotund figure.
The ring is chunky, measuring 5/8” north to south and 15/16” east to west. In very good vintage condition, it falls between a size 4 3/4 and 5 (can be sized) and is marked 14k on the interior of the band. The joy of this laughing Buddha is contagious and looking at his gleeful face, one can’t help but smile in return!
