A sexy 14k rose gold leg wearing stilettos and a garter with a ruby, bursts through the center of a sterling silver star in this fabulous custom made 1940s Retro brooch. Engraved on the back of the star is the name Michael Todd and on the front of the leg, the name Lynn Powers. This brooch is likely a memento of the Broadway burlesque review, "Star and Garter", produced by Michael Todd in 1942 / 1943. Michael Todd was a well known producer and also famous as Elizabeth Taylor’s third husband (the only one she did not divorce.) According to IBDB, Internet Broadway Database*, Lynn Powers was a member of the "Star and Garter" cast, along with Gypsy Rose Lee.
The star measures 2 3/8" north to south and 1 13/16" east to west and weighs 12 grams. It is marked 14k on both the back of the leg and the back of the clasp. The gold has a slightly rosy hue and the ruby, being of the Retro period, is synthetic. In very good vintage condition, it has an age appropriate patina and a slight curvature to the pin stem.
We don’t know if this one-of-a-kind brooch was custom made solely for Lynn Powers because of a special relationship with Michael Todd, or whether he had one made for each cast member as a memento of "Star and Garter." We only know we have never seen another one like it and love the unique mixed metal design, sexy theme and its connection to Broadway theater.
