This figural 14k lion's head brooch is a replica of an applique in the shape of a lion's head, which is part of a collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.* The design is from the period of the Achaemenid Empire (sometimes known as the First Persian Empire), ca. 6th-4th century B.C. The original was a gift to The Museum of Metropolitan Art in 1956, although this replica brooch was created and sold there during the 1980's. The lion's head measures 1 7/8" tall by 2 3/16" wide and weighs 21.3 grams. It is marked MMA and 14k on the back. Worn as either a brooch or a pendant, it is in very good vintage condition. The design of this dramatic lion is fiercely beautiful and is particularly captivating because it combines realistic imagery with highly stylized elements.
