Romantically framed in a flurry of textured and polished 18k yellow gold ribbons and bows, this finely rendered Victorian Swiss enamel depicts two lovers courting in a lush, idyllic setting. The sweethearts linger in a tender embrace, adoring pets by their sides. The dog looks on with rapt attention while his master woos his beloved and the sheep blissfully closes her eyes. Beautifully rendered in fine detail and vivid color, the enamel exudes a dreamy aura of delightful contentment.
The back is marked "LE REPOS" and "d'apres Boucher" which refers to the painting as being "after Boucher," a famous French painter. On the reverse side at the bottom there is a hook, from which a pearl, locket, or any number of pendants may be suspended. A chain might also be woven through the bow at the top, allowing the piece to be worn as a pendant. Grand in scale, the brooch measures 2 1/2" by 2 1/8". The enamel is in very good condition and exemplifies the finest quality workmanship in enamel paintings. c. 1870
