A beautifully carved shell cameo of a maiden, with a diamond jewel set in her hair, is further embellished with flowers in her hair and on her neck, cascading down to her garment. Treated royally, she is elaborately framed in a silver mounting that is accented with approximately 105 marcasites in varying sizes.
The frame is decorated with a leaf and scroll design which borders a more tailored box set marcasite frame immediately around the cameo. Bezel set marcasites adorn the top, as if a crown, and this motif is repeated from the middle to the lower section of the frame.
The bail, which sits atop the ‘crown,’ is set with smaller marcasites .
The carving is well done and the subtle color change from a darker nude color, on the top section of the cameo, fades gently to the lower half. Her profile is charming and youthful and the overall sentiment is quite pleasant. We are estimating it to have been made in the 1920’s.
The cameo measures approximately 40mm in length x 29.5 mm in width. From the top of the bail to the bottom of the piece, the measurement is approximately 82mm. And, at the widest point of the frame, it measures approximately 46.5mm.
Indeed, this is a grand and striking piece of jewelry. As a pendant or as a brooch, it is noticeable and impressive, presenting an elegant and important presence.
