In 2003, Lynne bought a collection of jewelry from the Marsh family. Marsh & Co. is well known in California for their jewelry and Asian art. They are no longer in business and, as a result, pieces from their galleries and shops are highly sought after. Among the designs and styles of the jewelry for which they are well known is the collection of black, matte finished iron jewelry set with pearls, diamonds, colored stones, coral and jade.
Three of the pieces from this collection are what Marsh called "drop in" rings. These rings were designed for clients who would then order a custom ring to be 'dropped' into the black matte-finished guard ring.
This example features a slender, sexy natural Zambian ruby attractively set east-west and finely flanked by polished sterling silver bezel sides. The equally slender and fine panels that comprise the shoulders are beautifully engraved in the style found on the backs of many of Marsh's pieces. These panels follow the gently faceted black matte finished iron ring with the subtle difference in angle as the design moves down the shank.
The ruby weighs 0.67 carats (actual weight) and is a delicious pomegranate red. The life in this stone is bright, shiny and beautiful and brings to mind the juicy pomegranate seeds when the light passes through the fruit around the seed. The stylish red, black and silver combination of colors is as exciting as the blend of the matte, polished and textured surfaces of this ring.
A polished sterling silver band encircles the interior of the ring, a classy finish to the overall design where the metal appears not only on the outside of the ring's design but is carried throughout the interior. The length of the engraved shoulders is approximately 12.5mm. At the widest, the top measures 8mm across and tapers to 4 mm at the bottom of the shank. The ring is a size 6-61/4 and can not be sized. While the camera captures everything and some wear is noticeable in the images, this does not appear nearly as apparent outside the camera's lens or on the hand. Since there are two others in this collection, in different sizes, please have a look at the golden and orange sapphire drop in rings offered in Adorn's collection.
A rare opportunity to own part of Marsh & Co. jewelry history with a contemporary finish makes this ring an especially attractive and interesting piece of jewelry!
