A gorgeous find for an early sewing collector, with great provenance - this and many of our recent 19th century sewing tools came from a respected English sewing tool collector and retailer who very sadly passed away last year.

This genuine 1840 to 1860 period hussif, pocket sewing kit is made from very, very fine glazed linen with its original pink silk ribbon edges. It has a no fuss simplicity that is all together very charming and quite Quaker like. Of sewing roll form it unbuttons to reveal 5 inner compartments, each with fancy red silk stitch design borders. We love the needleholder with its woolen flannel double leaves, and the large rectangular bottom holder for perhaps storing scissors or even knitting needles, tambour hooks etc. This would have been an indispensable, portable sewing aid for a 19th century stitcher, needleworker.

Please see the other similar aged silk skein holder hussif with the same provenance, sold separately.

Size closed 7.75 wide by 2 inch tall. Size opened: 7.75 inch wide by 8 inch high.

Condition. Good, strong and usable. Some age related perishing to the pink silk ribbon edging, only in some places. The original luceted pink silk button securer to the front has broken, the matching interior securer is in good order. Small insect hole to flannel needleholder. A couple of pulled threads to the front.
