An unusual purse from the 1860's. This type of purse is a variant on the earlier Georgian pense purse.

This Victorian version is of larger proportions - as coinage increased in size as the century went on. Patterns for such purses were advertised in the lady's magazines of the period.

The body was crocheted in deep purple/mulberry cotton with brass metal beads incorporated in the crochet technique! The top bars, ring and base finial are all matching and original cut steel examples. To open the purse you slide the top bars back through the ring. Attached to the outer ring is a matching cut steel chain.

Size: 6 inch tall by 2.5 inch at its widest point, or (15 cm) by (6.5 cm)

Condition: Showing its age a little. The brass beads have tarnished. One old stitched repair to the body in a slightly different colored thread - seen to the reverse. The steel chain at some point re-attached to the steel ring with thread.

A rare surviving example, perfect for the collector, Civil War costumer or film prop department
