A delightful English layette pin cushion or christening cushion from the early Victorian period of 1844. Such pretty examples were given as gifts to new mums to welcome their new babe into this world. Our large rectangular example is covered in cream silk satin and has its original straw over sand stuffing contained within a linen body.
Our example comes with super provenance, it belonged to a well known English sewing tool collector and retailer whose passing will be sadly mourned in antique sewing circles.
The sentiment spelled in pins is 'Welcome Little Stranger. May 20 1844. A pretty Royal crown to the center, surrounded by family initials CS, HS, MS CC and JS and TFS'. The pins are original 19th century pins made in two parts. This cushion retains three of its original four silk bows to each corner.
Size: 6" by 5.25" by 2.75" (15 cm by 13 cm by 6 cm). Images taken in natural English daylight
Condition: Good, untouched with a half a dozen old insect holes to the silk satin, that leak a little straw dust now and then. The reverse of plain silk satin does show minor age perishing to the silk. As mentioned, one corner silk bow is missing.
A very pretty little example from an age gone by......
