Do you adore 18th century Georgian gentlemen's silk waistcoats but would be at a loss of how display such a large item? Well, this wonderful item is you solution as it is only a part section of a French 18th century silk waistcoat that has been beautifully framed in the late 19th century. It is THE perfect 18th century decorative textile. A really unique, one off textile for your wall and a riveting conversation piece.
This stunning example of French 1790's silk embroidery is ready to hang and admire. One can easily gaze at it and transport oneself back to the time of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI when such waistcoats were highly fashionable. See identical examples at The Met Museum, New York.
We are not sure if this front panel was a surviving section from a made up 18th C waistcoat, or whether the original waistcoat remained uncut (never made up). Either way it is superbly fine and screams superb French 18th century workmanship. Just study the intricate ornamental embroidery of those gorgeous meandering carnations all impeccably worked in satin stitch. Teeny individual flowers also cover the remaining area, we particularly like the stamens stitched in French knot stitches. The color hues of the silk embroidery on the plain cream silk ground are delightful with gentle fading over the centuries leaving no color to jar. Of course the color of this waistcoat/vest would have been chosen by the owner to compliment his suit.
