This is a truly wonderful child’s nursery ware plate. This stunning plate will make a superb addition to your blue and white collection...see last images for some display ideas.

This little beauty was produced in the Regency period in England during the 1820s. The pearlware plate features the most delightful blue and white transfer printed design. The scene is titled ‘The Sower.’ The verse reads:

‘With steady hand the Sower throws. That seed on which so much depends. Following the Ploughs deep track he goes. And plenty every step attends.’

We see the farm worker sowing seeds out in the fields; we love the farm house in the background. Notice the horse and plough. We also love the decorative, raised border. This is such a decorative piece of early pottery.

What is unusual is the transfer printed mark to the reverse of the plate, reading ‘Progress of the Loaf.’ This is the title of the poem, The Progress of the Quartern Loaf by Mary Belson Elliott (1794-18700. When each scene from the poem illustrated a different part of the process for of making a loaf of bread - ploughman, sower, reaper, thrasher, miller and finally baker.
