A very rare survivor from this early 18th century period. Circa 1715 this small fragment of woven silk most likely originated in the Lyon silk weaving district of France. It was probably part of a silk sample book. The blue coloring would have been so vibrant interspersed with silk wrapped woven thread. The naturalistic motifs incorporated in this weaving are absolutely typical of the early period in French weaving.

Although now very faded and fragile, one can see from the reverse the original vibrancy of this silk.

Complete with the remains of small paper Museum label to the bottom that reads,

'K2 - Fragment of Ribbed Silk Brocade, woven in coloured silk and silver-gilt thread on a blue ground with a floral design. Period of Louis XIV. French; early 18th century.'

Size: Approx 9.75 inch tall (25 cm) by Width 6 inch (15 cm)

Condition: Fragile and delicate due to its vast 300 years of age. Some general soiling to the silk ground, impressions along the top where it was once part of a silk weavers sample book. Some perishing to the silk ground. General fading.

A super survivor perfect for research, or a project, see last image.
