This is a wonderful opportunity to own a stunning, large, Royal portrait (one of a pair, each sold individually). The portrait is after Alfred Edward Chalon RA (b 1780 – d 1860) who was a Swiss high society portraitist. The engraving was likely produced by Henry Meyer, and published by Rudolph Ackermann (see ref below). What an imposing portrait.
The portrait features Princess Charlotte of Wales (b 1796 – d 1817) who was the only child of George, Prince of Wales (Prince Regent, then later King George IV), and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick. If she had outlived both her grandfather King George III and her father, she would have become Queen of the United Kingdom; but tragically she died prior to both of them at the tender age of 21. At the time of her death the whole country went into deep mourning; so much so that linen-drapers ran out of black cloth. Allegedly even the poor and homeless tied armbands of black on their clothes in respect. Reference: For Charlotte: NPG D33514 in the National Portrait Gallery online collection.
The portrait is housed behind old glass in its original gilt frame. The frame is absolutely stunning! The portrait is also complete with its original wood backing board with original ink inscription describing the scene.
Measuring: The substantial frame width 12.5 inch (31.5 cm) by height 16 1/8 inch (41 cm). Aperture width 9 3/8 inch (24 cm) by height 13.25 inch (33.5 cm).
Condition: Historically trimmed to fit frame removing the publisher details. Light surface wear to Gesso frame commensurate with age, ready to hang.
