We could not resist this super example of a French pressed horn snuff box that dates to the 1830 period. The reason for our excitement is the most delicious floral display to the lid. One is used to seeing figural scenes from pressed horn examples from this period, to have a complex floral bouquet is scarce. One is more accustomed to seeing such floral designs on silk needleworks from this 1810 to 1830 period. One has to imagine that this small refined snuff box was made and owned by a female (yes, ladies took snuff also).
Size: Width 3 inch (7.5 cm), Height 0.75 inch (1.5 cm), Depth 1 7/8 inch (4.5 cm)
Condition: Not quite perfect. A small bruise to the horn lid, seen top right of the central floral display. Old historic chips to the underside rim of the lid. The lid does not completely shut snug to the right hand corner - suggesting a slight, unseen warp to the 7 hinge construction.
A super little example for your collection. We love genuine antique snuff boxes, they are a very tactile link to their distant past.
