We could not resist this simple school girl sampler. Its small size and so, so neat stitching make it a honey. We adore the minute red and blue cross stitch stitching on the hemp canvas ground. The blue silk edging is a real find, seen occasionally on early samplers.
Although unnamed, we see that the girl who wrought this was Aged 10 years and we adore the humorous saying 'No pains no gains'.
This original antique sampler is unframed.
Size: 11.25" (29 cm) long by 5.75" high (14.5 cm)
Condition: Good bright and stable stitching with strong colors. Four rust spots to the hemp ground top right corner. The blue silk edging is worn and fraying in some areas, commensurate with its age. Has been historically stored folded, see fold to centre.
The perfect sampler for your country, folk art interior or sewing room.
